Creating Your Photography Booking Calendar with Intention

Listen on: Apple Podcast | Spotify

In this week’s episode, I talk about the strategy that I personally use to set up my booking calendar for the year. By removing some of the guesswork for myself, I’m able to determine how many clients and sessions I need to take on to meet my goal income.

There’s a story I love about a professor who brings an empty jar to class, filled with big rocks, and asks the class if it’s full — Naturally, they reply with “Yes.” Then, he takes some smaller pebbles and fills the jar even further — and repeats his question. The students again reply with, “Yes.” The professor then takes sand and allows it to filter down to the bottom, then asks his question yet again. At this point, the jar is much fuller than it originally was.

This story helps me to plan my calendar and business for the year. By breaking up my obligations into big rocks, pebbles, and sand — I’m able to determine where I can fill in my schedule without feeling burned out halfway through the year.

At a glance, you can write your non-negotiable obligations into your calendar and then work backward by filling in all of the other activities and plans that you have for your business. Later, you’ll be able to further fill in the gaps with the “sand” to ensure you’re meeting your goals and creating the life that you want for yourself.

As photographers, we require a certain level of flexibility. However, it can be helpful to look at the big picture to give us a roadmap for the rest of the year.

I talk about:

  • How to create a roadmap for your business
  • Setting goals without suffering from burnout
  • Keeping your non-negotiables a priority
  • Working backward to meet your goal income
